Hong Kong Computer Society Elected New Council Members
Continue to Strive for Council Development through its Commitment to Professional Development, Young IT Talent Cultivation and Society Caring Through ICT as Priorities
The new Council members of the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS), the largest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professional body in Hong Kong, have been elected in the Annual General Meeting on 1 June 2021. To lead the Hong Kong Computer Society to a new milestone, the newly elected President, Dr. Rocky Cheng, and Council members will continue to its commitment to professional and industry development as well as community services to ensure the IT sector continues to make a positive impact on peoples’ lives with three main goals, namely talent cultivation and professional development; industry development and collaboration, and the effective use of IT in our community. These commitments aim to foster the further development of HKCS, and assist the Hong Kong ICT industry to enhance its competitiveness in the international arena, and thus contribute to the long-term development of the Hong Kong economy. HKCS also strives to encourage students to pursue IT-related studies at the tertiary institutions.
Dr. Rocky Cheng, President of the Hong Kong Computer Society said: “It’s my pleasure to be elected as the new President of HKCS. Being the most well-established and the largest ICT professional association in Hong Kong, we are constantly evolving to meet the latest developments in the technology industry. In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic in every corner of the world, Hong Kong has experienced an economic downturn and has yet to see the light at the end of the tunnel. In this midst of this difficult time, HKCS encourages Hong Kong businesses and people to fully utilise ICT to their advantage. Despite the pandemic, our four Specialist Groups – Artificial Intelligence, Financial Technology, Cyber Security and Enterprise Architecture have continued to engage our members and the public by organising a series of online events including Webinars, Workshops and Forums in order to build a stronger tie with our members, effectively reflect the interests of them and evolving trends in the IT industry. Professional and industry experts were invited to share their insights and knowledge with our members in a new format under the ‘New Normal’.”
Dr. Rocky Cheng pointed out that the HKSAR Government has launched the policies of driving economic growth through innovation and technology development and Hong Kong has been positioned as an international innovation and technology hub in Greater Bay Area. Leading sectors such as finance, shipping, trading, tourism and service industries have been relying on ICT for further development. Looking forward to the vast changing industry with new transformational developments in new era technologies including in 5G, big data, smart city, artificial intelligence leading the industry direction, ICT professionals do not only need to react quickly and response to what are currently happening, but need to be much more forward looking and plan ahead. HKCS will continue to strengthen the role in driving continuous professional development of ICT industry, raising the benchmark of professional standards, and fostering strategic alliances with industry partners and government bodies.
“HKCS will support the government to proactively cultivate the innovation and technology industry, and further strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international innovation and technology hub. Furthermore, we will continue to focus on talent cultivation, promote professional development of the industry, and encourage more youths to pursue IT-related studies. HKCS will support the government to enhance the ecological environment in ICT industry for the career development and entrepreneurship of young people in Hong Kong, helping them to realise the ideal to create a better future of the world with technology.” Added Dr. Rocky Cheng.
Dr. Rocky Cheng remarked: "On behalf of the HKCS, I would like to thank the members of the previous Council, the four Specialist Groups, CIO Board, iLEAP, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Club, FACE Club as well as all Committees for their contributions. We also welcome the new members to this session. Their joining brings the Council with an even broader spectrum of industry’s distinguished talents, which enables us to strive for the development of the ICT industry in Hong Kong. In addition to professional development and talent cultivation, HKCS will also step into the community in the future to promote caring for the society through ICT. We hope to consolidate wider efforts of our industry, in order to encourage and assist the community in enhancing the digital operations, through our profound technology expertise and experience.”
